Hey Sier, I think this is a really great post with a lot of good points. I agree with you in the sense that cultural relativity is descriptive of how our society functions. All cultures are in fact different, with alternate values, social structures, beliefs and so on. I like your example with music I think makes a great point, people like and listen to music for so many different reasons and just because I may think my music is better than yours doesn’t mean it is because its all a matter of opinion, which is malleable. My only objection is that I think we should all advocate for our morality. For instance the Kwakiutl will kill people for no reason which is kinda grimy. Now I’m not saying that we should go conquer and change their culture but we should make our opinion on the matter clear and advocate for better solutions in an attempt to make the world a better place. People can’t know its wrong if no one ever tells them. Thats just my two cents, I appreciate your post my guy be smooth.

Hey Analissa, This is a very well thought out post and answers the prompt perfectly. I agree with your conflicted-ness about Mill’s ideas of lower and higher pleasures. I too think it is wrong to say that just because someone finds joy in simpler or lower pleasures does not mean they are a fool or a pig. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy deep thought, debate, and other uses of intellect but I also enjoy the feeling of raining falling on my skin or the warmth of the sun on my face and to say that I’m a “fool” because I enjoy those pleasures I think is silly. What people find to be pleasurable is a matter of opinion and is different for everyone. I don’t think Mill was intending to make his argument seem that way but It very much does read like he is. Again great job!

Hey Linda, thank you for your insight on this post. I too believe that in some situations cross cultural judgement should be encouraged. Yes very culture is different and should be respect but their are moral lines we should all draw in the sand. Ancient Aztecs would sacrifice thousands of their own people purely because they thought it would insure the sun raise the next day. Obviously that belief is based in ignorance and should be debated. Education and support of better morals should always be an options. I’m not saying that we should invade and conquer cultures that do things our culture deems wrong but we should at the very least my opinions on the matter clear in an attempt to educate and advocate. Great post Linda thanks so much!

Analissa you make very good points, its a hard question and their is no clear answer. I would like to think that by legalizing it and creating a strong institution to regulate it would at least make it safer, because like you said the practice will continue legal or not. Kant’s CI would without a doubt not agree with the practice because the goal would be get money for your organs and not just because it is the right thing to do to help someone in need. If their was some way to insure that people wouldn’t take advantage of the program then I would be all for legalization.

Nice post Sier another killer one bud. I agree with you that opening the boards would be good in the eyes of a utilitarian because it would bring more pleasure and happiness to those who are less fortunate. I also agree that the arguments against it are flawed. They argue that it’ll lower the IQ of the country but I disagree, when people get more opportunities they are more likely to learn and grow as people not the other way around. And the idea that it would increase crime, drugs and trafficking is purely conjecture. Right now with all the security and restrictions people still find a way to get their vices. Most of those people are at the lower end of society and turn to them because they don’t have opportunities so i think that you could argue that opening boarders would cause a decrease in those said areas. Just some food for thought.
