One night at Zocalo, where I work, a man covered in tattoos came into the bar. He was crying but sat down at the bar to order a beer anyway. After I poured him a beer my co-worker and I realized he didn’t have any money to pay for the beer so Terrie took it from him. He looked so sad and broken that I felt bad and returned the beer to him, telling him it was on me. He thanked me for my kindness but then proceeded to ask me for a hug. I refused telling him that I gave him an inch with the beer and now hes trying to take a mile on me. Surprised by the encounter I then waked to the other side of the bar and told a few two other co-workers about the interaction. Denise, who I had had mixed feeling about her character surprised me by walking over to the man to comfort him. She bought him dinner, gave him her ear and after talking for sometime gave him a hug which visibly comforted him. It was a virtuous act of kindness and warmed my heart to observer. She later told me the man had just been diagnosed with cancer and was not expected to live much longer. I was very inspired by her willingness to physically comfort a stranger and saddened that I had not shown him the same kindness.
